Inventors at AmerTac have developed a nightlight with a pretend built-in ghost detector. Described in a patent application (2012/0033448) published last week, the nightlight is designed to allay a child's fears of "abnormal or paranormal things and creatures such as monsters, dragons," and even "unconventionally clothed persons with exaggerated features."
The tombstone-shaped device displays a sequence of flashing lights to simulate "a continuous scan for abnormal activity," followed by a simultaneous flashing of the lights as an "all clear" message. The message "is intended to assure the child that the device has searched for anything that in the child's imagination could be a threat to the child and that the search has been negative."
