A recently-published patent application reveals a new graphical interface object: a knob with a pop-up slider.
In the physical world, the knob is one of the all-time great user interfaces. We still say "turn up the volume," even when there's nothing to turn. But knobs have disappeared from most electronics, and no virtual knob metaphor has really taken its place.
Apple has applied for a patent on an invention that may keep kids from saying "slide up the volume." The application, published on Feb. 2, shows a display of virtual knobs.

If you select a virtual knob, the knob is highligted, and a temporary slider appears that lets you "turn" the knob by sliding left or right.
Apple watchers consider the application to be evidence that Apple is working on a touch-screen desktop computer.
The application was filed on July 30, 2010, but the Patent Office hasn't yet begun its examination, so it is far from clear if or when a patent will be granted.
